Back in the spring we reported disturbing news about the future of Friary Park Bowling Club. Severe cuts by Barnet Council to the maintenance subsidy meant that the Club has had to find new ways of financing it to ensure that it remains a viable and valuable asset to the Park.

The Club’s members refused to be beaten, which would have meant closure or merging with another club. After negotiations with the Council it has been agreed that the Club would take over looking after the green whilst the Council continued to maintain the outside of the clubhouse and some other parts. The Club undertook to pay the Council to maintain the green for the 2017 season whilst more permanent arrangements could be made.

Aware of their vulnerable financial position the members have been busy looking at new ways to remain viable. They have started a programme of encouraging new members with reduced subscription rates, held two open days in the summer, and gained sponsorship and donations from local businesses and individuals. They distributed over 8000 leaflets and have made concerted efforts to reach out to the local community to broaden the appeal of the sport.

Park Facilities

Friary Park is a nine hectare formal Edwardian park in Friern Barnet in the London Borough of Barnet.

A high, level, more formal area to the north is where most of the facilities are found. The ground then drops away quite steeply, as a wide grassy slope, to a wooded stream (Blacketts Brook) and a more natural area – good for dog-walking, tree-climbing, kite-flying… winter tobogganing. There are two basketball posts on the tennis courts.
